YOUR FIRST GAME

Take your first turn.

Review your thirteen cards, then bid how many tricks you expect to win. For a first game, choose an ordinary bid. Follow the highlighted cards as the first trick begins.

THE BASICS

Spades rules at our tables

01

Bid as a partnership

Your ordinary bid combines with your partner’s. A NIL bid means you intend to take no tricks; it scores +100 if successful and −100 if you take a trick.

02

Follow suit

You must follow the led suit when you can. If you cannot, play any card. Spades are trump. The highest spade wins; without one, the highest card in the led suit wins.

03

Breaking spades

You cannot lead a spade until one has been played on another suit’s trick, unless your remaining cards are all spades.

04

Count the bags

Making the team bid earns ten points per bid trick and one per extra trick. Extra tricks are bags: ten bags cost 100 points. Miss the bid and lose ten points per bid trick. Play to 500; a team reaching −200 loses. A tied winning score requires another round.
