YOUR FIRST GAME

Take your first turn.

You sit at the bottom, with your partner opposite. Read the trump card and the highlighted action. Choose Stand or Beg when asked, or Give one or Run the pack when you are the dealer. On your turn, select a highlighted card.

THE BASICS

All Fours rules at our tables

01

Start with a partner

Four seats make two teams. Partners sit opposite and play moves anticlockwise. Each player starts with six cards. The next card turned up sets the trump suit.

02

Stand, beg or run

The player to the dealer’s right may accept trump with Stand or ask for a change with Beg. The dealer can give the opposing team one point and keep trump, or run the pack: three more cards each, then another turn-up. Same suit? Keep running. If the pack runs out, redeal with the same dealer and keep kick points.

03

Follow the trick

A trump is always a legal choice. Otherwise follow the led suit if you have it. If you cannot follow, you may discard. Highest trump wins the trick; without trump, the highest card in the led suit wins. The winner leads next.

04

Reach 14

The first team to 14 wins. Kicks and gifts count immediately. After a hand, count High, Low, Jack, then Game in that order, stopping as soon as a team wins.

POINTS BEFORE THE FIRST TRICK

Yes, kicks count.

Every qualifying turn-up awards the dealer’s team points immediately, including cards turned while running the pack.

A♠+1 pointAce kicked
6♥+2 pointsSix kicked
J♣+3 pointsJack kicked

Example: the dealer’s team has 12 points and turns a Six. The two kick points take that team to 14 and end the match immediately.

AFTER THE HAND

High. Low. Jack. Game.

Count these points in this order, stopping when a team reaches 14.
PointWho earns it?Score
HighThe original team holding the highest trump dealt.1
LowThe original team holding the lowest trump dealt, even if the other team captures it.1
JackKeep your team’s trump Jack, or capture the opposing team’s trump Jack.1 kept / 3 captured
GameThe team with more card value in its won tricks. A tie awards neither team this point.1

Card values for Game: Ten = 10, Ace = 4, King = 3, Queen = 2, Jack = 1. Other cards add zero. These are counting values, separate from the match score.

If both teams have 13 and Team A owns High, Team A wins before Low, Jack or Game are counted. A trump Jack that was never dealt cannot earn a Jack point.

The rules at this table

AITN uses the Six for the two-point kick, optional begging and legal undertrumping. House rules elsewhere may differ. Illegal cards are disabled here; you do not need to call a renege. The online dealer is selected by the game and then rotates to the right each hand.

This guide describes AITN’s implemented rules. For a wider explanation of variants, see Pagat’s All Fours reference ↗.
