YOUR FIRST GAME
Start on Easy. Select one of your pieces, then a highlighted destination. White moves first; choose Black in the practice panel and start a new game if you want the computer to open.
THE BASICS
Checkmate the opposing king: attack it so that no legal move can remove the threat. Capturing the king is not a move.
Rooks move in straight lines, bishops diagonally, and queens combine both. Knights move in an L and may jump over pieces. Kings move one square. Pawns advance forward and capture diagonally.
Legal castling, en passant and promotion are supported. The game prevents moves that leave your own king in check.
Practice is untimed. Online games give each player ten minutes. Checkmate, resignation or a lost clock can decide a winner; the rules also recognise drawn positions.
START WHERE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE
All levels are free without an account. Practice stays in this tab; refreshing or leaving starts over. It does not change ratings or match history.
Easy makes simpler choices. Medium and Hard consider more options. These levels are not certified ratings.
